As I observe cattle, they have a certain pecking order. I have had my own, unintential experiments in disrupting those orders, but they remain. You can cull out the most aggressive cattle, leaving behind the gentler cows only to see those gentle cows establish themselves as queens of the herd.

Sad to say people are not much different. To be honest, I hate class systems. I hate the fact that if one woman doesn't wear the right kind of clothes, another woman might not speak to her. If your children don't go to the right schools or don't have a certain amount and quality of material possessions, they will be excluded by certain groups.

The class systems seem so apparent here in Honduras. I was beginning to think class discrimination was almost non-existant in the USA by comparison. Reality is, the methodology of classification is different. In America, most communites/neighborhoods are "master-planned". Homes are grouped in areas by price range. Therefore most of your neighbors have roughly equivalent incomes and financial standings. There are exceptions, of course.

In Honduras, a wealthy man might live amid a very impoverished area. You might think this would serve to cross over the class boundary, but it seems to have the opposite effect. Generally the wealthy must pass by many poor before reaching their homes. The fact that they can remain in expensive vehicles with closed windows helps to build the boundary higher. To intermingle with those of lower classes could require you to share or help the community around you. So the barrier is maintained and fortified.

What's interesting here is that the class is not based on income level, but on perception. It's a facade. You can have a generous income and even be much more financially sound than a certain class, but without the material possessions, they won't acknowledge you. You can attend a child's birthday party and still not get the time of day from the self-perceived upper crust. To me it's comical and I enjoy distancing myself with casual clothing etc but I know others that are hurt by it.

This whole class facade reminded me of a scripture, though I know it was spoken to an entirely different audience:

“Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You  clean the outside of the cup and dish, but inside they are full of greed  and self-indulgence. Blind Pharisee! First clean the inside of the cup and dish, and then the outside also will be clean."

(John 23:25-26)
