Subject: Defining Christians

Matthew 5:16
Let your light shine before men in such a way that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven.

More often than not it seems we, as the church, define ourselves by what we don't do rather than what we do. The Pharisees often criticized others based on their extensive list of rules. When asked what the two greatest commands were, Christ answered:

Mark 12:28-31

One of the teachers of the law came and heard them debating. Noticing that Jesus had given them a good answer, he asked him, “Of all the commandments, which is the most important?”

“The most important one,” answered Jesus, “is this: ‘Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’ The second is this: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no commandment greater than these.”

Jesus spent most of his ministry teaching, healing and feeding people. What stands out about Him, is what He did, not what He didn't do. If we spend our time telling others how we suffer and deny ourselves for Christ, how is that attracting people to the Kingdom? If we tell others about our sufferings, have we not already been compensated by men?

Matthew 6

“Be  careful not to practice your righteousness in front of others to be  seen by them. If you do, you will have no reward from your Father in  heaven.

“So when you give to the needy, do not announce it with trumpets, as  the hypocrites do in the synagogues and on the streets, to be honored by  others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, so that your giving may be in secret. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you."
