How can the same thing go from happy to wretched in two months?

On Mother's Day we built a portable chicken house for Paula. A few days later we procured some hens and a rooster. At first we were dissappointed by the lack of eggs. One day Paula decided to let the hens out for some sunshine. They foraged and roamed a bit. After a few days of freedom, then hens began producing a lot of eggs.

A few weeks ago, Paula and the kids built a "keyhole garden". They built it up with bricks, lined it with compost and filled it with dirt. They then planted seeds.

You can see where this is going.

This morning Paula yells at the kitchen window where the hens were pecking at the seedlings. "Get out of there you wretched chickens!"

Here's the kicker. We have about three hens sitting on a box of around 15 eggs, trying to hatch them. I I find it amusing to act like you are going to take one of their eggs. They, for lack of a better word, growl and cluck at you. Get too close and they'll peck your hand.

Soon we'll have triple the amount of those wretched critters.
