Subject: Power Outage

This morning the power went out at the house, nothing unusual here. After trying to call the power company about 15 times and getting no answer, I realized that the power might be out for the day. It happens.

Normally on outage days I park myself at Wendy's. They have two tables in the playground area near electrical outlets. There are health risks involving flying objects and contagious diseases, but I need to keep my job. They have wi-fi, but the last few times I've visited, the wi-fi goes out after about 30 minutes. The only thing I can figure is that they limit client use to half an hour so that they do not loiter like I need to.

Today I decided to take a different tact. Since the power company did not answer the phone, I decided that I need to drive to their office and let them know the power was out. While I was there, I noticed an electrical outlet in the lobby, next to a decent chair. I plugged in and started working. Nobody was at the front desk, no employees to be seen except a security guard. Roughly six people were waiting to speak to the power company. One of the clients commented that the employees had been in a meeting for an hour, so they have been waiting.

So here I am, syphoning electrical currents from the power company who shuts down the power grid in our area unexpectedly, and frequently. Although the employees are pleasant and did not tell me to leave, I feel some kind of poetic justice about the siituation, even though the power I will consume will amount to less than a quarter after spending about six bucks in gas to commute to and from my new workplace.

It's a wonderful life.
