Subject: Meaning of Life

Sometimes we are faced with potentially life ending events, diseases, conditions. These things will occur to every one of us at some point in our own lives, and in the lives of our parents, family and friends.

We are born. We grow. We work. We play. Eventually, it all comes to an end. So what does this life mean, what are we to do? I wholeheartedly believe that Jesus answered that for us over and over again, but summed it up in response to a question by a pharisee:

“Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?”

Jesus replied: “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.”

-Matthew 22:36-40

Sometimes the end of life comes without warning. Based on statistics, we are usually shown that life is or could be coming to a close. Modern medicine often gives us a chance to face our own mortality. In these times we have the opportunity to prepare our families, our friends and ourselves for the next chapter, the forever chapter.

Our lives on Earth are both extremely important, and at the same time altogether insignificant. Eternity will make 70+ years on Earth a small, fleeting memory. However, how we spend our lives on Earth, or more importantly, who we live them for, will determine where we spend eternity.

Thomas said to him, “Lord, we don’t know where you are going, so how can we know the way?”

Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. If you really know me, you will know my Father as well. From now on, you do know him and have seen him.”

-John 14:5-6

One last thing, know this, no sin is too big for God to forgive. No matter what your past, you can find freedom, forgiveness, in Christ. God created the heavens, the Earth, the entire universe. Forgiving your sins is not too difficult for Him.
