Subject: English Class and the Neighborhood

You may remember that I spent some time this past school year volunteering at the younger boys school, Destino Del Reino, helping/teaching English class with grades Kinder - 2nd grade.  I was asked if I could come back this next school year starting in August or September and teach the 2nd. and 3rd. grade English classes 2 days a week.  The school will be adding 3rd. grade this year.  I am going to do it!   I will 45 min. or an hour with each grade 2 times a week.  I do not know if someone else will be working with them on the other days.  The school is not bilingual by legal standards so there is not a standard they have to follow.  The school wants everyone to leave knowing how to read, write, and speak English though.   Today I visited with another missionary, Sue, who teaches English at another christian, private school here.  She shared everything she does and gave me much information and lessons from here experience.  She was a teacher in New York before coming to Honduras.   I am thankful for her experience and willingness to share.   So now I am ready to lay out my lesson plan.  They will be learning more vocabulary, learning to write English, make sentences, and much more.  I am really looking forward to this class.  These children have had much exposure to English in their classes in the years they have attended Destino.   Please understand that we do not teach English here so that the children will grow up and leave for the United States.  We just want to provide them with more opportunities.  Even here in Honduras they will have so many more job, educational and life choices if they learn English.   Ada, a lady that works with us here, asked if it would be possible  to teach her children English.  She shared that she feels her children are very smart, could learn quickly, and would greatly benefit.  We said that she could come on Saturday afternoons and I would teach her.  That made me think that maybe all of the ladies that work here would like for their children to learn English.  I asked and they said yes.  I think that when Lauren gets here to help for June and July we will start working with them on Saturdays and maybe 1 or 2 more days a week in the afternoons after their school if they would like.   The boys have learned so much in such a short time. Of course they have so much exposure with videos, DVDs, our talking, visitors, etc.   Well that is one thing we can give, English! Paula
