Today Jose opened up a new source of very cheap pig food. We now have a weekly appointment at the local bread factory to pick up their dried out (overcooked) bread. We collected about 150 pounds of bread, which will save us about $25 on weekly food expenses. That is good, but we can do better. We are going to try and pick up from the local produce market all the veggies and fruits that are overripe. From what we've seen, there are is probably 500+ lbs of such produce twice a week. If we could get a good portion of that, we'd barely have to buy food from the feed store.
It is now a twice weekly chore to shuffle pigs around to various stalls in order to make room for the new or growing pigs. We will probably reach a critical mass in about four months and better have some more housing ready.
Ol' Bessie (our van) is at the shop to repair springs and other issues on the back end. The bumpy road here is about to split the van in two. Alfredito (our "new" 88 Mazda B2200 truck) is doing well and is a good backup vehicle. It certainly has saved us some money by enabling us to pickup cheaper food for the pigs. We've also made a little money delivering feed etc to neighbors.
Today we weaned our last two litters of pigs minus one kind of sickly pig. We gave the little pig a shot of B12 and some antibiotic. Hopefully we can pull it through along with some help from the mother.
I'm glad the Lord is being patient with my learning deficit in farming!
